Should I Get an Abortion?

In a world where the value of unborn life is debated, the Bible provides clarity. From the very beginning, Scripture reveals that God views unborn children as fully human—not as potential life, but as real, living souls.
With this in mind let's consider, is the taking of unborn life is regarded by God as murder, or just a personal choice?
1. God Sees and Knows the Unborn: David on Being Known as an Embryo
In Psalm 139:13-16, David reflects deeply on God's involvement in his life before he was ever born:
“For you produced my kidneys; you kept me screened off in my mother’s womb... Your eyes even saw me as an embryo; all its parts were written in your book regarding the days when they were formed, before any of them existed.”
This powerful passage makes it clear that God not only sees the unborn—He knows them intimately. David refers to himself as an “embryo,” yet fully known and valued by God. God’s awareness of a person begins at conception, long before birth. The careful language David uses emphasizes divine craftsmanship and purpose in the womb.
If God acknowledges and interacts with human life at the embryonic stage, then ending that life is not ending “potential”—it is ending a person whom God already knows.

2. God's Law Protected Unborn Life
The seriousness with which God treats the unborn is also seen in his law to Israel. Consider Exodus 21:22-25:
> “If men struggle with each other and they hurt a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but no injury results, the offender must pay a fine... But if injury results, then you must give life for life...”
This law shows that even accidental harm to an unborn child was taken seriously. If the child died, the punishment was the death penalty for the offender. The unborn were not treated as expendable or less than human, but as individuals whose death was a capital offense under the Law.
If God required “life for life” in cases of accidental killing of an unborn child, how much more serious is it to deliberately end that life?
Many women have succumb to pressure and fear and chose to have an abortion. In so many cases the regret has lasted their entire life. They do not simply forget about the child they once had inside them.
God’s heart is hurt by abortion. According to his word:
Life begins in the womb.
God knows and forms every child before birth.
Harming an unborn child is treated as murder in God's Law.
These truths make it clear that abortion is not a matter of personal choice alone—it is a matter of moral accountability before God. Taking the life of an unborn child is shedding innocent blood, something Yahweh repeatedly declares He hates (Proverbs 6:16-17).
God's people are called to defend the voiceless (Proverbs 31:8-9), and no voice is more silent than that of the unborn. May we uphold the value of life that God Himself upholds from the very beginning.
